Native plants #751713

Asked May 24, 2021, 9:49 AM EDT

I want more native and pollinator plants and trees in my yard...typical lot size in a settled neighborhood. Where can I access a list of these plants and also invasive species for my area...Dayton. Also I realize ornamental pear trees are very invasive in our area and wondering what is being done to address this problem? Thank you! Sharon Greene

Dear Sharon,
I'll answer your second question first.  The State of Ohio passed legislation three years ago in 2018 to ban the sale and distribution of callery pear trees by 2023.  This fact sheet from the Ohio State University Extension provides the background: https://wayne.osu.edu/news/callery-pear-beautiful-tree-thats-causing-stink .
I am unaware of any local governments undertaking a control program.
Ohio State Extension also has a fact sheet on attracting pollinators to your yard:  https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/ENT-47
For taking a deep dive into the topic, take a look at this sheet of resources on how to locate native plants for pollinators:  https://u.osu.edu/beelab/native-plants-for-native-pollinators/

Enjoy planning your new garden and thanks for contacting us.

Thank you for the speedy response. I posted the pear article on my FB page... consciousness needs to be raised about this menace! Wondering if there is any way to speed up the process? 2023 seems a long way off!
