Our silver maple is slowly dying we pruned some 4/5” branches today and found the pictured insect. Is there anything we can do?

Expert Response

Hi Tim,

It looks like there may be bore holes from the picture you sent.  I'm not sure what the rest of the tree looks likes at this point.  There may be treatments that could be applied depending on the extent of the damage.  The silver maple does not do well in our are due to our clay soils.  A frequent condition experiences is iron chlorosis which causes the leaves to be a light green color.  A tree becomes weak when resisting damage or disease, allowing for other problems to occur.

The Adams County Mastergarden tree team is currently not providing home visit.  It would be helpful if you would send additional photos of your tree.  It would be helpful to see the extent of the damage, foliage on the tree and the area around the tree.  Also, would you provide any information regarding winter watering and when you started noticing the damage. This will allow a better assessment of possible treatment.

Because the tree team is not available at this time I've included an attachment that provides information on arborists.

Happy Gardening.

Hopefully we can save it. I also have one the same size closer to the house that is starting to show the same. But less damage.
