Is this a snake to be considered about

Sussex County Delaware

Expert Response

Luckily, there are only a couple of venomous snakes in Delaware. Venomous snakes have broad, triangular head shapes whereas non-venomous snakes have more narrow oval-shaped heads.

Northern Copperheads are rare and typically only seen in Northern Delaware. They prefer rocky, wooded hillsides and wetlands.

Can you please provide a photo or way to identify the snake you are asking about? We cannot assist you without being able to see the snake.

If you do not have a photo and are nervous about the snake, you can spray essential oils around your property to keep them away. Snakes do not like the following scents: cinnamon and cloves.

Thank you so much!

Good afternoon, AJ,

Thank you for sharing this photo. It's difficult to see the snake clearly, but I can assess by the shape of the head that it is not venomous. You see, AJ, if a snake is venomous then the shape of the head will be different because it needs to have room for the venom sacs. Since the shape of the snake's head is narrow and oval rather than broad and triangular it is not venomous.
