Squirrels and cardinal nests #751540

Asked May 23, 2021, 8:32 AM EDT

We have a active cardinal nest in a juniper tree in our yard. This morning, 5 squirrels rushed it and climbed right up the core of the tree to the nest. The cardinals chased them away (with a little help from me). How do we deter the squirrels? Would cayenne pepper sprinkled on the ground hurt the cardinals? Any suggestions are welcome. Momma cardinal is still on the nest so we believe the eggs are still there. Thank you.

Expert Response

Such backyard dramas can be frustrating, especially when there is no obvious way to affect the outcome.

When you saw five squirrel rush up the juniper, chances are they weren't bent on raiding the nest. We guess you might have observed a squirrelish dispute of some kind that just happened to culminate in the vicinity of the nest.

Whether any of the squirrels eventually returns specifically to disturb the nest remains to be seen.  If/when that happens they probably won't be returning as a group.

We don't know whether and how pepper might be used to deter squirrels in the circumstances you have described.

The experts don't have much to say that will help either:

Thank you so much for the reply. I assumed they were after the eggs and never thought it might just be a squirrel quarrel. That is a bit comforting. We will keep our eye on them. Thanks again.
