Cottonwood timing #751539

Asked May 23, 2021, 8:28 AM EDT

Will this year’s weather change the blowing of cottonwood? It seems like it would have started by now, but haven’t seen any yet in NW OH.

Hi Cathy,

I'm not sure what you mean by "weather change".  Here in central Ohio it has been pretty typical - wet spring followed by dry and hot as we move toward summer. What is happening up north that is different?

Cottonwood seeds blow after they their pollination is over.  Are the trees in your area at the end of their pollination cycle? Has the "change in weather" affected their pollination cycle?  Typically the cotton would blow anywhere from May to July.  Has it been earlier in prior years?

Here is a link from a great source that you can explore further.

  I hope this helps.

Many blessings,

Diana

Thank you. I’ll check the link provided. I was referring to snow in April that was more than typical and after buds were opening on trees. Usually we would be seeing cottonwood by now and haven’t seen any, and pollen levels have been higher than previous recent years. Thanks
