Oh I bought gardenias at Home Depot for a flower bed I live in Lorraine county will these plants survive winter?

Lorain County Ohio

Expert Response

Hi Gail

Thank you for your gardening question. Lorraine County is in zone 6. Typically gardenias grow well in zone 8 and above. It appears that there are some newer varieties that can be grown in colder climates. Do you know if you have this type? Is there information regarding zone on the tag? I am including an article on how to grow indoors if these are a tropical variety and you want to over winter them indoors. https://www.purdue.edu/hla/sites/yardandgarden/gardenia-a-gardeners-challenge/

Thank you,
It does not say on the label what variety or zone the Gardenias are, I assumed it was a new winter hardy variety when I purchased them. We planted them already so I’m hoping. We do not get a lot of sun here in the winter so that may be a factor also.
Please let me know if you are aware of any similar flowering shrubs or mounded ground cover that would grow in Lorain county? In case I need to replace them next year.
Thank you again.
