Ailing maple tree #751436

Asked May 22, 2021, 10:18 AM EDT

We have a maple tree that seemed very healthy last year. This year the leaves are small and not maturing. The trunk seems to be darkening near the base. What causes this and what can be done to return it to health?

A healthy tree should have a root flare at its base. Your tree has roots that are choking it. The tree roots are strangling its trunk, preventing the trunk from growing, and stopping the flow of water and nutrients within the tree. Your tree was planted too deep. The following site will help you determine if your tree can recover. https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/remove-circling.shtml

The next site explains how to hire an arborist.
