Carpenter Ant Spray effect on Bees #751411

Asked May 21, 2021, 10:49 PM EDT

I would like to treat my wood porch and steps for carpenter ants. How and when can this be done to avoid hurting bees? I have a professional available to do this who has worked with bee hive owners, Thanks,Mary

Expert Response

Because ants and bees are closely related to each other, most products that kill ants will also kill bees. The University of Minnesota posted an article on treating carpenter ants that talks about non-toxic ways of treating carpenter ants, such as removing the parent colony. However, insecticide treatment is usually required to kill the carpenter ants. See below

Are there times of day that are better to treat porches with no bees near them?

Bees are least active at night.
