Managing 26 acres as naturally as possible #751308

Asked May 21, 2021, 2:11 PM EDT

Hi, Working on building resources for 26 acres of hay and pasture in SE Albany, (closer to Lebanon). Looking for resources for what soil testing company's to use; what natural/organic fertilizers are available. Not looking to go certified organic. How to get 12 acres of previously commercial farmed grass seed field back to manageable natural farmed; it went all to thistle the first year after not commercially spraying it; how to bring it back without heavy chemicals? Also interested in Barley seeds; needed for feeding fodder; where to buy, or what could be grown here in the valley? Thanks for any help, Roger

For information about the barley seeds and controlling the thistle, I have a few questions for you. What type of thistle do you have? can you give more detail about your questions about the barley? Are you looking for barley seed to plant and grow as a hay crop? It might be easier to chat over the phone. Feel free to give me a call at<personal data hidden> and we can talk more about your situation and some management ideas.

Hi,
Wow, that is a lot of info. Still going through it.

I believe it is Canadian thistle. I’ll try to send a picture.

As far as barley, I’ll give you a call. What’s a good time?

Thanks
Roger

That does look like Canada thistle to me. It is difficult to control because it stores energy in its extensive root system, so it takes several years to control. Here are some resources that might help:

https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/natural-resources/canada-thistle-3-108/

My schedule is fairly open tomorrow, so any time works for a call. I will just give you a call back if I miss you.
