Arborvitae #751271

Asked May 21, 2021, 11:25 AM EDT

Hello, Will you please clarify... scientifically, is an arborvitae a shrub or a tree? I have some globe-shaped arborvitaes that I think would be called shrubs. I wonder if my pyramidal arborvitaes that are tall and skinny are called trees? The foliage looks identical. Thank you. Jeff

There are a number of arborvitae (Thuja) species and varieties of various form and size occur among them. Most of the arborvitae used for ornamental purposes in the USA are cultivars of American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis).
