What kind of insect is this? #751254

What kind of insect is this? Should I kill it or leave it alone? It is 2.25 inches long. There are three of them on the house.

Kent County Michigan

Expert Response

If the insect is around 2" it's a fishfly, Chauliodes spp. If it's around 3" long then it is a dobsonfly, Corydalus cornutus.

Both of these insects live near water and should be left alone.

Thank you!  After reading about the two, we believe it is a fishfly. The one in the photo has serrated antenna so should be a female.  We’re glad to know they are good insects and can live!
