Ant eating young Chinese broccoli roots #751245

Asked May 21, 2021, 10:21 AM EDT

I have regular brown ants that are eating away at the top 1/4” roots of Chinese broccoli/gailan plants, right below the green part of the stalk. Eventually, I think they make holes in the leaves too. I have noticed they only attack plant of a certain size, usually the plants that aren’t more than 4” tall. Is there an organic way to stop them? In the picture, I have circled the ant in green.

Venus, thanks for the question.

Ants on gai lan may actually be indicators of another pest.  Cabbage maggots do feast on the roots and ants are there to go after the maggots.  Cabbage flies lay there eggs at the base of brassica plants and once hatched will start feeding on the roots.  Cabbage maggots have been flying and egg laying recently so the timeline seems right.  Unfortunately, once noticed, there is not much you can do.  Crop rotation, cabbage collars, and row covers can help prevent the problem.  Nematodes are another alternative.  Holes in leaves could be flea beetles or cabbage worms. Check out the following link:

I hope this helps.
