Hello,
We have a well-established Japanese Maple that we planted about 6 or 7 years ago. It stands about 3-4 feet tall. Should I plan to cover our tree to protect it from cicadas, given its size? If so, what material do you recommend for this and when should we cover it?
Thanks,

Expert Response
Your tree is about the size that cicadas could use to lay eggs within branches. The Ann Arbor Department of Forestry has a nice guide with pictures on how to protect younger trees from cicada damage.
If you live in an area with 17 year cicadas, they should be emerging soon. If you see high populations, your tree will benefit from the protection offered by netting.
