Pruning flowering crab apple tree #751198

Asked May 20, 2021, 11:41 PM EDT

I live in Scandia and my flowering crab apple tree has just finished blooming. I would like to remove some lower branches for easier mowing. Is it too late in the season? Thank you.

Hi,

It is not advisable to prune crabapples in the spring and summer; it can increase the chances of infection and fire blight. See this from the U: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/pruning-trees-and-shrubs#time-pruning-to-avoid-diseases-and-other-problems-1336760
