Since we have had such a up and down spring temperature wise, I would say that your lilac has frost damage. The frost has killed the buds. It will probably bloom again with the buds that were not open when the frost occurred. If not, it will bloom next year, the lilac is not lost. You are not doing anything wrong. Thanks for your question.

I do not think that you have done anything wrong. Covering it with a sheet was the right thing to do, but when you cover it, get something to prop the sheet up form laying on the blooms. The sheet can get wet and freeze and damage the buds. Cover before the dew gets on plant because that can freeze and cause damage. When covering make sure the cover goes to the the ground so there can be heat from the ground getting under the sheet. Frost is normally over by 9 or 9:30 so be sure to uncover before the sun gets to warm because that can cause damage. I would wait and see if the Lilac blooms this year and next year. I think the cold weather is the buds turned brown. Thanks again for your question.
