Lemon tree leaf problem #751068
Asked May 20, 2021, 12:51 PM EDT
Hello there,
I need help identifying what is wrong with the leaves on my lemon tree. It is a 'Eureka' lemon tree that has been wintering indoors. I have just started bringing it in and out for the season, but this leaf issue appeared before that. In March, two leaves came up with this and then I cut them off. The smaller leaves toward the bottom have brown tips and something like (or is?) chlorosis from last year. I think that was from inconsistent watering and fertilizing. Since then, I water once a week a specific amount and fertilized with Espoma Organic Citrus Food (2-2-2) once a month. Now, two more leaves have appeared with this odd brown/white pieces on the leaves. Any idea what it is?!

Expert Response
thank you for your question and the photos. There could be a couple of issues. 1- sun scald. If water is left on the leaves in sunshine it can scald the leaves. From the photos that is what it looks like. However, look very closely on both sides of the leaves and see if you can see any insects. I don't see any from the photos but it does require close examination. Lastly, do not over or under water. Citrus trees like consistent and somewhat moist soil but not wet soil. Do not over fertilize. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer. If it does not improve you may want to do a soil test.
Hope this helps
Thank you! This helps immensely. I think you are correct, that it is sunscald. I forgot that for a while I was misting the leaves to add humidity and that seemed fine until March (when I think the sun was shining strongest into the window where the lemon was) and then the tree did get rained on and was in the sun following the rain. I have been inspecting it very closely for signs of insects and thankfully have not seen any (my last lemon tree succumbed to pests). Thanks again!!
