netting a 3' dwarf jap maple after cicada shells are on it, too late? #751028

Asked May 20, 2021, 10:57 AM EDT

I have a dwarf Japanese Maple tree that is 3 feet tall, planted maybe 3 years ago. It is COVERED with cicada shells. If I knock them off is it time enough to cover it with netting? Or might it survive if left alone?

Expert Response

It's actually been 5 years growing.

The shells have no effect on the Japanese maple.  It is the live cicada female laying her eggs into the branch tips that impacts a tree.  This action may kill the tip beyond the laying site, but usually it only amounts to a tip-pruning of a tree and does not harm the tree or shrub.

You can net your tree now if you think some tip pruning would be a problem for it.  You have time, as the females have to mate before they can start laying eggs.

Here is our page on cicadas, which includes how to net and when: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/cicadas
