Question about wounded tree #750993

Asked May 20, 2021, 7:37 AM EDT

Hello, I recently planted a 6 foot tall sycamore tree in my yard. Tonight I accidentally hit the base with a weed whacker (stupid stupid stupid mistake). There is still some bark intact from ground up, but about 4/5 of the truck is stripped in about a one inch band. I have wrapped it in a wet paper towel and secured it with packing tape. What do you recommend I do now/next? I looked at Tree Kote products but wasn't sure that was the correct solution. I want to try and save the tree and am asking for any help you can provide. Thank you in advance for your time.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

It's hard to tell exactly how bad the damage is without seeing a photo but from your description, it sounds severe. This kind of damage is called girdling. It keeps nutrients and water from moving up the tree and you might see leaf drop or wilting as a result. Covering the wound or using Tree Kote is usually ineffective for this use and might even promote the growth of moisture loving fungi. Sadly, you might have to take a wait an see approach as once the damage is done, there is no going back. At best the tree's cambium might grow over the damage but a scar will always remain, and a section of the inner wood might be exposed which can potentially rot in the future.

Here is some additional information.
