Asian Pear fruit looks damaged #750965

Asked May 19, 2021, 7:54 PM EDT

My Asian pear has lots and lots of baby pears on it; many look damaged. Was it the cold? Or do I have an insect problem? Many thanks!!!

Thank you for reaching out to us with your question. Unfortunately, your photos are blurry and I cannot see the details of the fruit. Could you send us a closer and clearer photo of one of the fruits that have symptoms, please?

Here are (hopefully) better photos. Thank you!

Thank you for sending these additional photos.

These look like symptoms of rust, a type of fungal disease. Several species of rust can infect pears (and apples) and cause the fruits to become deformed. Rust diseases can occur if Juniper trees are nearby. https://extension.umd.edu/resource/apple-and-pear-diseases

It is too late to spray a fungicide for this now. A fungicide will not cure the symptoms that are already present. Remove the infected fruit and consider spraying early next year with a protectant fungicide. You can follow the Home Fruit Disease and Pest Prevention spray schedule found on our website: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/home-fruit-disease-and-pest-prevention-spray-schedule
