Woody Tree Growing Within Lilac Bushes #750938

Asked May 19, 2021, 5:48 PM EDT

Greetings, My neighbor would like to cut down a wood tree that is growing in the lilac bushes that separate our properties. I thought it would be a good idea to find out what it is first. Since taking this photo, I've seen it in many places across the Twin Cities. In particular, I've noticed it because of the yellow/orange spots. Can you help me identify it, and the yellow spots? Thank you for your time, Digger

Expert Response

I think your tree is Common Buckthorn, an invasive species.  Watch for more coming up.  The orange spots are rust fungi.  Take it out.  Common buckthorn (umn.edu)
