Hi Lisa, thanks for the question.
Unfortunately the photos are not clear enough to get a reliable identification but the weed is possibly ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea). Although it does spread by seed, ground ivy primarily spreads vegetatively. Removal of the ground ivy plants and seedlings prior to transplanting (get as much root as possible) and applying a suitable pre emergent herbicide. Post emergent herbicides, if carefully applied, can also be used. Mulching is an option. It is best not to remove the soil. Check out the following links:
