Health of Siberian Elms #750735

Asked May 18, 2021, 7:38 PM EDT

I have been infusing my elms for two years for leaf miner, flea weevil and anthracnose, but was late last year and haven't gotten the service to do it this year. I live in Birmingham. It looks to me as though it is too late for the elms this year. Do you think that I will be wasting my money? Do you have suggestions? Thank you, very much for your advice.

There is always a lot going on with Siberian elms.  The flea weevil has been bad in recent years but many other insects feed on this elm.  It can also be compounded in heavy seed years where seeds cover the tree and leaves take a long time to come out.  Timing of control of elm flea weevil is critical because they come out so early.  You would need to get a company that agrees to be on time with treatments for it to be worthwhile.

Thank you for you answer. Yes, that is what I was afraid of. The company came out last Wednesday as soon as I threatened to go elsewhere. But do you think that it was too late for the weevils? I still wondering what you would have done about timing this year. Thanks again. Bob

I would believe the weevils were still feeding on the tree when it was sprayed last week.  A lot of feeding had already occurred on these trees.
