Yellow Branches on Evergreens #750645

Asked May 18, 2021, 1:10 PM EDT

Many evergreen shrubs and trees in my yard have yellow branches. Are these branches going to revive as the summer moves along or are they dead and need to be cut off?

Expert Response

Hello,

It sounds like you have several different species that are showing signs of yellowing.  This is likely to be winter dessication. This happens during long dry spells in the winter when the air temperature is relatively warm, and the ground is frozen. If that's what is going on, you don't really need to do anything- the yellow needles will fall off in time. https://planttalk.colostate.edu/topics/weeds-cultural-problems/2129-winter-desiccation-evergreens/

Because it sounds like you have several species involved, it doesn't sound like there is a particular insect at work (most of them are host specific) - although more detail on the species, and perhaps pictures would allow a better evaluation.
