spraying cheatgrass once it had headed #750632

Asked May 18, 2021, 12:36 PM EDT

I've got some patches of cheatgrass that I'll spray, but it is heading-up early. It looks like the atached. I'll plan to hit it with some glyphosate. Will that seed be live/viable once it is sprayed?

Expert Response

Hi, It looks like you have a healthy patch ofCheat Grass! If you have not sprayed yet, the seeds could already be developed and may be viable. The glyphosate will kill the grass, but maybe not the seeds. It appears that seed formation has already begun, and they may or may not be viable. I am sending you a Fact Sheet on Cheat Grass that discusses some options for eradication. Good Luck, it can be persistent! It is best to deal with it before seed formation has begun. But with diligence you will have success. Thanks for Contacting the Master Gardeners.

Thanks for your response:

a followup question:  If I mow the cheatgrass now, (I'll take the cuttings to the landfill or burn them) will it head again?

I can also till it up and pull the roots after I mow it.

Thanks again.

Hi RB,

As with any plant material that has viable roots, it will probably continue to grow and you may have to repeat the process of spraying/digging, etc. before you eradicate it completely.  Good luck with this endeavor.
