Hi Dana,
Most of these are warm season species and need not only warm air temperature, but more importantly, warm soil temperatures to germinate. Stay patient! It's been a cool, wet spring and the warm season grasses just aren't interested in growing...yet. Soil temperatures above 60 degrees will lead to growth/germination.
But keep on top of the weeds! This is sooooo important. Use chemistry or weed by hand. Control weeds when they are small.
And if we get drier weather, start watering by hand to keep the seed coat moist. See attached publication on watering.

Hi Dana,
I need to know what weeds you have. More than likely anything you can buy at a box store will not work, since you have warm season grasses.
Please email me photos of the weeds. My email address is: <personal data hidden>
The type of weeds will depend on what herbicides you can use.

Hi again
You have some thistle and bindweed (perennial weeds) and knotweed (annual weed). I can't tell on the grasses. Would you be willing to have Dr. Koski, our turf specialist, stop by? Seeing it in person is best.
Why are you planning to seed again? Is it a different section of land?
Thanks
Hi Dana,
Tony thinks he'll stop by today. I have given him your cell and address. He'll be in touch. Sorry I can't make it! I'm currently on a training and teaching a 4-H workshop tonight. I'll follow up with his recommendations!
Hi Dana,
I've provided Tony with your email and he will follow up with what you discussed yesterday. Thanks!
Hi Allison,
I have not heard back from Tony, I am trying to remember which herbicides he recommended for which weeds..... Quinnclorac...? for the bind weed which is the most prevalent. He told me he would send explicit instruction?.....I used roundup week ago Sunday to kill the weeds I was sure were weeds.... lots of green popping up but I'm not sure what is what and what to spray......can you help me?
Thanks
Dana
Hi Dana,
Spray carfentrazone (QuickSilver) and quinclorac (Drive). The carfentrazone will address many of the small broadleaf weeds, and quinclorac will do bindweed and weedy grasses.
See if Ewing Irrigation sells the two herbicides (also buy a sprayer).
The Co-Op may also sell these (I-25 and Mulberry on the west frontage road).
