What should I do about dandelions? #750408

Asked May 17, 2021, 1:08 PM EDT

My yard is full of dandelions. I'm trying to grow ground covers which are getting squeezed out by them. Is there a way to get rid of them or contain them (for bees) without having them completely take over?

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for reaching out to us. Dandelions are crazy this year thanks to all the moisture we have had. There really is no way to get rid of them except to manually pull them out if you do not want to spray them. There are some great tools for pulling weeds or a big flat head screwdriver will get right underneath them and flip them out. I really appreciate you wanting to help the bees by leaving them. Try to pull them before they seed. I would also consider aeration in your grass early in the spring and later in the Fall which will help control them and keep your grass healthier.

Thanks so much for this information -- sounds like I'm not alone! I will plan to aerate -- better late than never :)
If I were to spray them, what would you recommend?  I have ground covers in the same area that I'm trying to encourage (ice plant, lotus, golden storksbill, vinca) so I don't want to poison them. For example, using a vinegar solution would harm the 'good' plants.
What would be least toxic to pets, wildlife, the environment?
Thanks again!

Hi Tracy,

I have attached an informative article concerning dandelion control. Unfortunately in the situation that you have with the dandelions intermingled in your groundcover most applications of herbicide will also target those plants.  If you were to use a product from the list inside the article, your best chance for success would be to spot treat and shield the other plants from overspray.  This is often achieved with a cone or can over the weed and applying the herbicide within that protected cover.  Always follow instructions on the label for any application of herbicides.  Good luck!
