Wound on tree #750365

Asked May 17, 2021, 11:32 AM EDT

I have a cherry double weeping tree that has a large wound on it that I discovered last fall. I wrapped it for winter as the tree is only about 2 year old. I am concerned as to what need to be done.

Expert Response

This is a sizeable wound on this tree.  The picture is helpful but from the picture it is not possible to determine if it is a physical/ environmental injury - weather related, or if there is a pest/disease element.

You could contact your local Extension Office & show them the picture and get their advice on obtaining a sample of the bark near the injury and sending it or taking it to their Diagnostic Lab.

You could also contact a certified arborist in your area to provide an in-person consultation on the tree.  A list of certified arborists is available through:

The Associated Landscapers of Colorado (ALCC)  www.alcc.com
