Lawn Grass - huge dead spots #750361

Asked May 17, 2021, 11:17 AM EDT

I live in Cheyenne, and my lawn has an issue that has gotten progressively worse over the last three years. This year, I have a spot that is 15 feet by 10 feet that is completely dead -- not a blade of grass in it. I have put down spectracide with no luck. Last year, I tried taking a spot down to bare dirt, putting down good soil, reseeding, and watering well. A little grass came back but it's now dead this spring. Can you advise me what to do, or someone to contact?

Expert Response

Hi Dale,

This is a really unusual situation. It does not look like a disease or insect problem. It looks like some sort of chemical burn, fertilizer burn, or an isolated soil issue. You can contact Catherine Wissner at the Laramie County UW Extension office - <personal data hidden> or <personal data hidden> and she can likely schedule a site visit to come take a look and possibly take a sample to send into our lab.

The rest of the lawn looks good. I wonder if sod would work better than seed in this area.
