Pruning - Weeping Norway spruce #750083

Asked May 15, 2021, 12:44 PM EDT

I have been told that pruning my weeping Norway spruce will encourage root growth. I believe it only encourages side shoots. I do not like to have it pruned - I prefer it to be its natural shape. What do you advise?

Judith,

You may allow the shoots to grow. Just give it good tree care:

Water slowly in times of drought.

Water if the fall is dry, up to when the ground freezes, usually in late October.

Mulch around the trunk but donot let mulch touch or pile up against the trunk.

Mulch no deeper than 3-4 inches.

Prune off any dead or diseased branches with sharp pruners so the cut is clean, not ragged.
