Two tomatillo plants for pollination? #750021

Asked May 14, 2021, 9:51 PM EDT

Do I need two tomatillo plants for pollination? Thats what people are telling me. Would a regular tomato cross pollinate with a tomatillo?

Expert Response

Unlike tomatoes, tomatillos are not self-pollinating.  You need two (although a neighbor's within a bee's flight will work).  And neither can be a tomato. Tomatillo (Physallis philadelphica) is a different genus and species than tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), although they are in the same family (Solanaceae).
