Thanks for the question.
Could you please send us pictures of your maple.? One taken from a distance showing the lower half of the tree. The second one should a picture of just the tree's base where you are seeing the exposure roots.
Many thanks.
So we lost the center of the tree a few years past as well. We have a few other projects going so please excuse the edging.
Thanks for the response.
It is common for larger maple trees to have exposed roots. Contributing to this is their relatively shallow root system. Sometimes gardeners are tempted to cut off the exposed roots, add dirt, and sow grass seed. This is a very temporary fix as water and nutrients will be deprived to the tree and it will die. The best solution is to remove all grass around the base of the tree out where roots are no longer exposed. Some type of wood mulch (for example, cedar or cypress) would go in this area. Do not put any type of plastic or cloth under the mulch. Use enough mulch to cover all the exposed roots. It will be important that you not have mulch right up to the base of the trunk. Leave an exposed area of a foot or so. You could even make a mulch ridge around this exposed area. The purpose of this is to create a type of basin at the base of the tree so that water has easy and fast access to the tree. The following deal with these and other points:
