Mushrooms growing in mushroom compost #749937

Asked May 14, 2021, 2:06 PM EDT

Hi! I bought a bag of mushroom compost to add to my vegetable bed, and now I see a few button mushrooms growing there. Do you think it is safe to eat them? I understand that mushroom compost comes from mushroom farms that sterilize it and bag it to sell in store like Home Depot and Lowes. Thank you, Tanya Wright

Expert Response

A mushroom is a spore bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground, on soil or on a food source.  Because you do not know how this one came to be in a bag of fertilizer, I would not recommend eating it.
