Azalea rhododendrum insect #749827

Asked May 13, 2021, 7:06 PM EDT

Beginning last year my mollusk azaleas had their leaves stripped down to just the main arterials. Could not find any bugs, flies, caterpillars, etc. anywhere sprayed with Bt (Bacillus Thuringienses) on new growth late spring and summer saw no more damage. This spring however, hundreds of white round spots are swelling on the woody branches. When scraped they ooze purple liquid. They are about the size of a large aphid. (the foliage so far is fine) I also noticed (for the first time ever) that my rhodies which are nearby have the same infestation on some of their branches. Any idea what this is and what to do about it??? I'm going to try a spray oil. Could send pictures from my phone via text or email if I knew where to send them. found a Master Gardener.  We researched your info and decided we are looking at "scale".   Using spray oil on them.  Disappearing.  Thank you.
