Asparagus should not be harvested until the third year, so you will have ample opportunities to continue to amend your soil.
I do not recommend fertiliing this year. Next year, before the spears appear, apply 1.2 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet and cultivate lightly into the soil. In July (the second growing season), sidedress with another 1.2 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 20 linear feet of row. To prevent burning the roots apply the fertilizer three to four inches away from the plants.
This year, make sure you keep your asparagus well watered.Water thoroughly once a week until the soil is moistened 8 to 12 inches deep. Also, make sure you remove weeds, which can compete with the asparagus for nutrients and water.
All the best, Roxanne
