Best trees for privacy fence? #749579

Asked May 12, 2021, 6:14 PM EDT

Hello! I am hoping you can give me some advice regarding the best trees for a privacy fence in the twin cities area? We are hoping to plant trees along the edge of our yard to block out some loud traffic noise. I have been doing some research but I thought I’d reach out to the experts in Minnesota! I really like the look of American Arborvitae. I like that they are cylindrical because we don’t want the trees to take up a large circumference (the yard is pretty small). Does American Arborvitae grow well in the twin cities? Are they prone to any particular diseases? Any other recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated! We hope to make the best, educated decision! Thank you!

Expert Response

The American Arborvitae is actually a cedar.  I do not know how susceptible it is to winter burn. It also is a fairly slow grower. The mature height is 40'-60' and mature spread 10'-15'.  Might I suggest Holmstrup arborvitae instead 15 feet tall and 5 feet wide at maturity.  Or consider Techny.  It is very resistant to winter burn and takes beautifully to pruning.  It has the same mature size as Holmstrup.  You must make sure to water evergreens in the fall until the ground freezes to avoid winter burn and the death of some branches and needles.
