Unwelcome Vine #749570

Asked May 12, 2021, 5:32 PM EDT

Hello, I bought a house this year with a beautiful row of lilac bushes, however there is a vine that is smothering several of them. Are you able to identify this vine? My neighbor called it a "grape vine". How do you recommend removing it, and what should I do to the lilac bushes to bring them back to life? Also, do you think it's worth trying to transplant the vine to a different spot or just kill it? The first pic is a close up, the second shows where it is coming out of the ground (stem set apart from the rest of the bush), and the third shows the most damaged lilac bush. Thanks for your help!

Expert Response

Hi,

It’s probably a grapevine. I would dig that out and not transplant it. The lilacs may recover on their own once the vine is removed. Here is information on caring for lilacs: https://extension.umn.edu/trees-and-shrubs/lilacs

Thank you Susan! I will get rid of it. I'm excited to learn about lilac care.

Best Regards,
Sarah
