Is it possible to prepare the soil and support turf that is shaded by a Ponderosa pine?

Expert Response

Hi Elizabeth,

It will be very difficult, if not impossible. Not only is the shade an issue, but the tree also outcompetes any grass due to its root system. We generally recommend that you mulch under trees, or let the needles from the ponderosa naturally shed.

If you want to try grass, the most shade tolerant species are the fine fescues (Chewings, creeping red, and hard). But they will likely get spindly and tall, since they won't receive enough sunlight.
