Oak Tree question #749485

Asked May 12, 2021, 1:24 PM EDT

Recently I moved to a new house and oak trees were already planted between the curb and the sidewalk. That space is approximately 3 feet wide and stretches between driveways. It is the oak that keeps its brown leaves through the winter and then drops them as the new leaves emerge in the spring. Question: Is this a good tree to have in a 3 foot space between a curb and sidewalk? Will the roots go down or will the roots remain near the surface. The irrigation goes on daily all summer, so water for the tree is near the surface. In my last house the roots remained near the top, eventually destroying the sidewalk and uprooting a drainage pipe. I don't want to repeat that expensive lesson. Thanks! Michael

Two things would be helpful to hear back from you: Photos of said oak tree would be useful to ID the tree; also depending upon where you live there is a list of City approved trees that you should consult.  It may be that the tree is question is no longer recommended and could be replaced with one that is.  I am dealing with a similar issue and looking at sidewalk repair here in Beaverton.
