Growing Beets #749448

Asked May 12, 2021, 10:54 AM EDT

Good Morning, I'm growing beets for the first time. I will grow them in a half-barrel container. I have beet seedings now. When can I plant them? The recent temperatures in Swanton, MD have varied 35 (night) - 48 (day). We've had frost warnings and hail. Since beets are a spring crop, I was hoping to plant them earlier than the frost date. If there is a frost warning I am prepared to cover them. BTW, I planted strawberries two weeks ago and they are doing well despite the cold weather. Thanks so much. Ellen

Of course, weather varies year to year, so we can't give you an exact date. Here is our planting calendar and also spring frost dates: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/vegetable-planting-calendar

Here is our beet page: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/beets

Since beets can withstand light frost and you plan to cover them if necessary, you should be able to push the envelope and get them in.
