Silver maples typically have shedding bark as the tree matures. So that is not a concern for the tree's health (https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/1996/8-9-1996/shedbark.html)
The abnormal growths are called burls. We aren't exactly sure what causes burls, but they are not harmful to the tree or an indication of poor tree health. (https://extension.umn.edu/trees-and-shrubs/non-harmful-tree-conditions). And burls are very common on silver maple trees. Some wood workers value wood that came from trees with burls!
And lastly, you ask about climbing trees with spikes to prune dead wood. Spikes should not be worn/used when climbing a living tree. While the holes caused by the spikes usually heal over,
the holes allow a site of entry for wood decay organisms. It is also possible for infected climbing spikes to transfer some disease organisms from diseased trees to healthy trees, much the same way the common cold can be spread from person-to-person. So spikes should only be used on a tree that is being removed.
You may want to consult with a certified arborist regarding the overall health of the tree. The two leaders may need some cabling to prevent splitting. You can locate a certified arborist that works in the RVA by consulting this list from our Chesterfield unit: https://www.chesterfield.gov/DocumentCenter/View/20469/Certified-Arborist-List-PDF?bidId=
