Plant, weed, identification app #749431

Asked May 12, 2021, 9:48 AM EDT

Hi, Is there an app you’d recommend to identify plants, weeds, etc that are native to NC, especially in mountain and Piedmont regions. Ashe County and Wake County

Alamance County North Carolina

Expert Response

I am technically not allowed to answer questions except from residents of Wake County, so I can’t spend a lot of time finding the best answer, but my favorite web site for identifying native plants is the NC Native Plant Society.  Web site is below.  Apps that many master gardeners use are INaturalist, and Picture This, but this second one costs about $20 per year.   Most plant ID apps are hit or miss depending on the quality of the photo and how much of the plant is in the photo. I wish there was a good weed ID app as I would use it all the time, but I don’t know of one.

Then I am glad that I did answer.  Can’t explain why the system listed the county as Alamance.  It is my understanding that only a few counties in the state are doing Ask Extension, so we are asked to check county that is listed to make sure it is Wake.
