Zoysia Compadre Yellowing #749424

Asked May 12, 2021, 9:27 AM EDT

Why is my Zoysia grass blades turning yellow/brown. My landscaper installed a super compadre sod last spring. In early fall many grass blades turned yellow/brown. Not entire sections like brown patch but two or three here and there. It is now doing the same this spring. My landscaper did a soil test and its ok. He has no idea. I can send pics.

Expert Response

Thank you for providing the pictures. How much water has your lawn been receiving each week? Zoysia needs 1/2 to 1 inch per week.  Zoysia is generally drought tolerant; however, please push a screwdriver into the soil in brown and green lawn areas. If the blade slips easily into green lawn and won't penetrate brown, the soil possibly is too dry. If the soil is rocky soil, dig a small hole to check soil moisture.

Please let me know about the moisture once you check it. I know we've had some rain here the past couple of days, but keep an eye on it.

Thank you for the help.  I used a 8" screwdriver and for the most part, it would penetrate with no problem.  However, I did hit quite a few rocks with the 40 plus holes.  Like all builders, they do not remove the gravel after finishing the house.  The yard is irrigated and I will monitor the amount.  Could you suggest a good soil ph/moisture meter.

Have a great weekend.

Good Morning Tom,

I am not aware of a soil/moisture meter; however, you can place a shallow plate, cup, solo cup in the yard where you suspect it may be iffy with moisture and see how much water is in there after your irrigation runs.  That will let you know if those areas are getting the 1/2 to 1 inch of rain per week.  Also make sure your sprinkler heads are spraying out evenly (observation) and then you can usually make the adjustment on the sprinkler head with the tool that came with it.  Sometimes the under part is not as strong.

Yes, builders seem to just bury everything :-)

Also Tom is you want you can get the FREE soil test from Soil Test and that will give you the pH of your soil.

I need some additional help.  Here are better photos of the issue I have with my zoysia.  In this dollar spot or maybe rust.  It occured last fall and now is more prevalent this spring.  I sprayed for brown patch last Wednesday.  Thanks

I just found this on your NC State Ext site.  How to treat it with products I can buy?

Tom, there is a free service that is available through NC State where you can submit these very detailed pictures and they will assist you with disease identification on your zoysia blades and possible treatment.

https://pdic.ces.ncsu.edu/how-to-submit/

If you submit a physical sample it is $30; however your pictures are pretty clear.  I hope this helps,

Angela

Thanks so much.
