Growing rhubarb in a container #749417

Asked May 12, 2021, 5:34 AM EDT

I live in a townhome with a patio that gets plenty of sun. Could I grow rhubarb in a large container? If so, what size/type of container is recommended? Assuming the container remains outdoors year round, how can I protect the plant over the winter?

Expert Response

It is possible to grow rhubarb in a container. Because rhubarb has a large root system, you’ll need a deep pot. Find a sturdy container that is at least 20” deep and wide. Make sure it has drainage holes. While rhubarb needs a period of cold temperatures, extreme cold can harm it. You might wrap the container in an insulated material or move it to a garage during the coldest part of winter.
