MN Hardy Hibiscus Frost Bite #749403

Asked May 11, 2021, 9:34 PM EDT

Hi there, I just purchased a MN hardy hibiscus plant before Mother's Day...I actually bought 4 plants. I bought larger-more mature plants that were already pruned from a blooming season or two because they had a sturdy base with pruned off growth from last year. I planted 2 of the plants near my house and two further away from the house out in the yard that is more exposed to the elements. Last night there was a frost and the two plants near the house came through the cold temps just fine with just a little browning on the edges of the leaves, but the two that I planted further out really got nipped. The leaves are brownish...not green and the stems are soft-ish. Ugh! I am certain that it didn't get cold enough to freeze the roots since I had a layer of mulch around the base, but I think that the foliage above ground is in tough shape. What should I do? Should I trim back the parts that were subject to the frost? Should I leave it and see what happens as the temps get warmer to see if it is able to bounce back? Did I kill the plant? Thank you for any help and guidance that you can offer. I was perhaps foolish to plant these before the middle of May, but since they were mature plants and a MN hardy specimen that says it can tolerate -30 in the winter, I just went for it. Thanks again, Katherine Norrie Northfield, Minnesota

Expert Response

The roots are hardy, not the leaves.  My hardy hibiscus have not emerged from the ground yet and won't until around the beginning of June.  The plants you bought were raised in a greenhouse or southern state. Just keep the mulch in place and if the frozen leaves fall off they will eventually be replaced.  Next fall, after the stems have been killed by freezing temps cut them down to about 4-6".  You will need to have the old stems there to prevent digging them up or planting on top of them next spring.
