Buds falling off maple tree #749286

Asked May 11, 2021, 11:33 AM EDT

Hello MSU Extension Services

Please find attached pictures of my ailing Maple tree.

The leaf buds mainly on the left side of the tree budded out, but then the buds and the twigs they were attached to have subsequently fallen off the tree.

I was hoping for some direction on what can be done to stop the tree from a possible continual health decline.

Any support you can provide is appreciated

Many Thanks

Expert Response

Hello David,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, because the photo is backlit, it is difficult to identify what maple you have and what is causing its decline. Maple trees are susceptible to a wide range of insect and disease problems. In addition, environmental events may affect it—if a sidewalk or driveway has been installed near the tree, the roots may suffer damage which may lead to the slow decline of the tree. Nutrient deficiencies in the soil, such as low manganese may also affect it. As an example, read about the silver maple here:

To obtain a thorough diagnosis, the trunk/bark, crown (where the trunk meets the soil) and the leaves have to be studied. Pictures of the trunk, leaves and the canopy can be sent to the Plant and Disease Diagnostic Lab at MSU Extension. Learn how to submit pictures and samples here: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

A certified arborist may be best able to analyze the situation. To find an arborist in your area, go to www.treesaregood.org, the website of the International Society of Arboriculture to find an arborist in your area.

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.
