Leaf spots on Salvia farinacea #749148

Asked May 10, 2021, 4:48 PM EDT

I grew these plants from seeds this spring, transplanted about a month ago. Had some rainy days recently. I just noticed these angular shaped translucent leaf spots on the upper leaves on one of the plants. Could you help me identify what this is and how to treat it? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Tianyi,

The discolored dots on your salvia look like the early stages of leaf spot - a fungal disease that is common on Salvia. To prevent this spreading, you should treat the plants with a commercial fungicide. You may also want to remove the infected leaves (if there are not too many of them) and dispose of them in the garbage bin. Do not compost them as the fungal spores will remain active. The damp conditions may well have encouraged the growth, so try to keep the leaves dry when watering.

If you prefer to use an organic treatment, you may want to try:

  1. 1 Drop Ivory Dish Soap.
  2. 2 TSP Baking Soda.
  3. 4 Cups of Water.

Shake well in a spray bottle and then spray the plants.

Good luck

Thank you Liz! Super helpful!!
There aren't too many yet, I'll make sure to remove and dispose them.
