Bitternut Hickory Tree Canker #748952

Asked May 09, 2021, 8:09 PM EDT

We have many bitternut hickory trees on our property and many of them seem to be infected with something that causes large cankers and then eventually kills the tree. Is there anything that can be done about this as a preventative or as treatment? Can it spread to other trees? We have many different types - butternut, walnut, oak, maple, cottonwood, etc.

Expert Response

Hello,
These large galls are typically caused by a fungus called phomopsis. These can occur on maples, hickory and oak. There really is no cure and not much is known about why trees are susceptible. In most cases the trees can live with these galls for many years. Pruning them out would cause more injury than good, too. https://bygl.osu.edu/node/1261
