wrapping trees to prevent cicada damage #748693

Asked May 07, 2021, 7:28 PM EDT

How completely must a tree be wrapped to prevent damage? Can there be any small openings? Is it enough to just overlap the tulle or must every opening be sealed off?

Expert Response

If you are wrapping a tree to prevent cicada damage, it is recommended that you close the netting or tulle entirely using zip ties or another type of fastener. Netting is only recommended for fruit trees and small, newly planted trees that are still establishing. It is not necessary to cover mature established trees. If you do decide to use the netting, we recommend propping it up in the center to keep the leader (central stem) of the tree straight up rather than bending over, which can result in poor growth in the long run. And be sure to remove the netting promptly after the cicada activity is finished. If left on too long, the barrier may physically impede new foliage/stem growth, reduce air circulation (which can promote fungal infection), and shade leaves which will later become sunburned when their full-sun exposure is resumed. This video from the UMD entomology department "Cicada Crew" demonstrates how to net a small tree.
