Butternut squash seeds #748569

Asked May 07, 2021, 11:30 AM EDT

I have saved seeds from a Butternut squash that I really like. It is called “Autumn’s Choice F1 Butternut. Can I use those seeds to plant and grow more butternut squash plants that will produce the same vegetable?

Expert Response

Hi Carey and thanks for contacting the Boulder County Master Gardeners,

Unfortunately, the seeds from an F1 hybrid plant will not produce true to the parent.  The seeds are the result of crossing 2 different pure lines and that process is done for each batch of F1 hybrid seeds.

Sincerely,

Molly H

Molly H, Wow! That has saved me such angst! I have a lovely trellis that I want to fill with butternut squash vines that are productive, too. I won’t be using my saved seeds. Thanks so much for your help!
