Eastern Oregon Plant ID #748406

Asked May 06, 2021, 1:26 PM EDT

Recently traveled to Cottonwood Canyon State Park where we saw this plant with unusual flower head/seed pods in a sagebrush climate. Can you ID it? Many thanks.

Dear Gail:

I believe that your fuzzy mouse plant is Astragalus purshii - Pursh's milkvetch. Astragalus can be difficult to identify, but yours has fuzzy leaves and also very fuzzy pods that look sort of like pussy willows, quite distinctive. This species is fairly common east of the Cascades I believe.
